The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is widely projected to execute a 50-basis-point hike during today’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) session, pushing the baseline borrowing cost higher to aggressively mitigate prolonged inflationary pressures and external macroeconomic shocks.

SBP Governor Jameel Ahmed is scheduled to chair the high-stakes meeting at the central bank’s headquarters in Karachi, with the finalized decision to be announced during a subsequent press conference. During its previous session on September 14, 2026, the MPC maintained the “policy rate” unchanged at 11.5 percent. However, severe global market volatility and domestic pricing pressures have fundamentally shifted institutional expectations toward immediate “monetary tightening.”

A comprehensive survey of market participants conducted by Topline Securities reveals a strong institutional consensus for a rate hike. According to the data, 61 percent of respondents anticipate an increase during today’s MPC meeting. Within this hawkish majority, 54 percent project a standard 50 bps adjustment, while a minority of 7 percent forecast a severe 100 bps spike. Conversely, 39 percent of the surveyed market participants expect the central bank to maintain the status quo.

“During the next 12 months, inflation is likely to average above 8.5 percent, remaining stubbornly higher than the SBP’s medium-term target of 5 to 7 percent.”

Underpinning the push for higher rates is a deteriorating inflation outlook driven by global energy markets. With Brent crude currently trading at the $100 mark, Topline Securities projects “headline inflation” for FY27 to average between 9 percent and 9.5 percent. At the current policy rate of 11.5 percent, this inflationary trajectory leaves a narrow real interest rate buffer of 200 to 250 bps. Furthermore, over the next 12 months, inflation is forecast to average above 8.5 percent, thoroughly breaching the SBP’s mandated medium-term target range of 5 percent to 7 percent.

Macroeconomic & Market Indicator Current Metric / Expectation
Existing Policy Rate 11.50%
Topline Poll: Rate Hike Expected 61%
Projected FY27 Headline Inflation 9.0% – 9.5%

Secondary debt markets have already preemptively priced in the impending tightening cycle. Since the September monetary policy session, sovereign yields have expanded to reflect the anticipated 50 bps hike. The six-month Market Treasury Bill (T-bill) is currently trading at 12.24 percent, sitting substantially above the existing baseline rate. Similarly, the six-month Karachi Interbank Offered Rate (KIBOR) has escalated, pricing at a premium of 12.43 percent ahead of the official MPC announcement.
